iPrompt Looks Promising
iPrompts is a new app available at the iTunes store designed for parents, special educators and other working with children and adults that have developmental challenges or that need a bit of visual structure in their daily lives.
It features 4 visual prompting tools that are quick and easy to use:
- Picture Schedules – to create sequencing social stories
- Visual Countdown Timer – displays a timer and visual prompt
- Choice Prompts – Select 2 images and give the user a quick choice
- Image Library – 100s of line art and photos for endless categories
At first glance it looks way cool and easy to use. When I was demonstrating it to the general education teachers, they noticed that the image library was missing a “school” category. Currently there are not audio features; I think further enhancements should include them as an option, especially for the countdown timer.
Overall, it’s this app has great potential and for the price it beats carrying around a bunch of PECs cards!
Bundle this with the Proloquo2go and you have one awesome iPod.

It sounds great, and I can’t wait to try it.
“…for the price it beats carrying around a bunch of PECs cards!”
I wanted to remind us all that PECS cards focus on the picture exchange and finding a communication partner to complete the exchange. Holding onto the icon makes the language tangible for as long as the student needs to process it. Technology devices are not always the best medium for these skills. Each person needs an individualized communication method. While this device may be better than PECS for some, PECS may still be better for others.
I agree about the communication partner and PECs are important. But when you are out shopping it can be easier to use the iPrompt pictures rather than a book of PECs. And it does take a different communication method.
